Charleston, WVThe West Virginia Family Foundation started a statewide television advertising campaign in 2006, highlighting the need for a Constitutional Amendment in West Virginia to define marriage. During the past legislative sessions, the West Virginia Family Foundation promoted legislation that would have allowed for a public vote this fall on changing our state’s Constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman. Unfortunately, the present democratic leadership of the state legislature would not allow the legislation to move forward. The West Virginia Family Foundation plans to promote the legislation again during the 2009 legislation session. Ray Lambert, Chairman of the West Virginia Family Foundation, said, “Liberal, activist judges all over the country are legalizing gay marriage, despite having DOMA and other marriage laws on the books. West Virginia needs a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage, especially in light of activist West Virginia State Supreme Court.” He added, “The Clifford K. and Tina B. case from June of 2005, where the State Supreme Court granted custody of a child to a lesbian partner, instead of the biological grandparents who had sought custody, is a wake-up call for those of us who cherish the God ordained institution of marriage as one man and one woman.” “We continue to be extremely disappointed that the current leaders of the West Virginia legislature, and especially Governor Manchin, do not feel the need to let the people of our state vote on this Constitutional Amendment,” said Lambert. “Forty-five states have passed legislation (DOMA) that recognizes that marriage is between a man and a woman. Around thirty other states have passed constitutional amendments that take the issue out of the hands of liberal activist state supreme court justices. The West Virginia Family Foundation has fought for the same constitutional amendment protections since 2006. It is time to put this critical issue in the hands of the voters of our great state.” “The West Virginia Family Foundation would like to thank all of our individual members, member churches and contributors for their support and willingness to stand up for traditional marriage,” said Lambert. Anyone interested in signing the Marriage Amendment petition is encourage to visit our website at www.wvfamily.org or call 1-304-721-4636 for more information. Nearly 30,000 West Virginians have already signed our petitions. END |
